A camera in the birth Space

Do you have any photos from your own birth? As in, the day you were born… Many people will have no photos from their own entrance into the world, or they might have one or two photos that happened a couple hours or days after they were born. Birth photography, as it is today, is a bit of a newer idea, though parents have been snapping photos at births since we’ve had access to cameras at home. Birth is an event we all experience, either through being born or through giving birth, or both. And birth stories are stories that can be passed down from generation to generation. This might happen orally, but I believe it also happens in our bodies. Those who have given birth often talk about this experience as one of the most transformative experiences of their life. Birth photography as it exists today holds reverence to these stories and seeks to capture the sacred experience visually.

So yes, as birth photographers, we bring our professional cameras to your birth. We seek to capture the storytelling moments of your experience. We capture the details that create the feeling of the day — the snacks you have, the time of day and season outside, the twinkly lights you set up, the music being played, and friends or family members that lovingly share the space with you. We capture the meat of the story as it’s unfolding — all of the position changes, laboring in the shower or tub, your facial expressions as you breathe or roar your baby into your arms, your placenta, and those first couple of hours where your new baby is initiated into the world. We also capture the emotion of the day — your emotions, your partner’s emotion, and the emotions of any loved ones who are near. Your story is beautiful and sacred. Through birth photography, these stories can be captured and used to integrate the experience yourself. They can also be visual treasures passed down for generations.
